Music Memories

Welcome to Music and Life and Other Things Too!—a rambling road diary from a former working blues musician. Here you’ll find stories from the band van, deep dives into the roots of blues, jazz, and rock, and reflections on how the music we love keeps shaping our lives long after the gig is over.

A neat stack of classic blues, jazz, and rock vinyl records leaning against a matte black bookshelf speaker on a low wooden cabinet. The record jackets show subtle edge wear and slightly faded colors, with iconic vintage typography visible but not legible. A turntable with a clear dust cover sits nearby, tonearm resting in its cradle, with a single record sleeve laid flat in front. Late-afternoon window light spills across the scene, creating soft reflections on the vinyl and gentle shadows behind the stack. The mood is warm and contemplative, suggesting a lifetime of listening. Photographed at eye level with balanced composition and moderate depth of field, in a clean, realistic style that feels both modern and nostalgic.

Stories From a Life in Music

I’m a former working blues musician whose life was lousy for a very long time. Not any more. At last I’m controlling my own destiny, selling guitars on Ebay, reengaged with music, and mostly enjoying life again, or maybe for the first time! I have wide ranging tastes and some weird opinions I suppose, but can’t wait to enthuse about all kinds of things – not just music. I’m also a WB animation nerd, a big baseball fan, though less so now, have ridden over a hundred roller coasters, and love vintage sci-fi novels. Big comedy lover too, everything from Chaplin to Conan O’Brien. I’m sure I’ll attempt comedy myself here!

A close, detailed photographic shot of a vintage analog tape deck on a sturdy studio desk, its brushed metal faceplate softly reflecting ambient light. Twin VU meters glow warm amber, needles frozen mid-level, and large, slowly spinning reels of magnetic tape show faint texture. Nearby, a spiral notebook lies open with a pen across its center, pages slightly curled. Cool, diffused overhead lighting mixes with a subtle warm accent light from the side, creating a balanced, thoughtful mood that suggests recording and reflection. Captured from a low, three-quarter angle with the tape deck dominating the frame, background softly blurred with hints of acoustic foam and a few coiled cables. The composition feels professional, clean, and reverent toward classic recording gear.
A quiet, late-night desk scene featuring an open laptop displaying a blank document, placed beside a small analog mixing console and a pair of closed-back studio headphones resting on their side. The desk is a dark, smooth wood, with a single notebook and a coffee mug ring subtly visible. The only light comes from the laptop screen and a small desk lamp with a warm bulb, casting a focused pool of light that fades into deep shadows around the edges of the frame. The mood is introspective and slightly moody, suggesting a writer capturing stories from the road. Shot at eye level with a shallow depth of field that keeps the laptop and headphones in crisp focus while the background recedes softly. Photographic realism with a clean, modern aesthetic.
A meticulously composed flat lay of a blues musician’s tools spread across a dark, textured tabletop: a row of differently keyed harmonicas in a soft, worn case, a compact tube amp head, a coiled cloth-covered instrument cable, a well-used slide, and a small notebook with a closed cover. Subtle scratches, tarnish, and frayed edges give each object a sense of history. Soft, diffused overhead lighting eliminates harsh shadows while creating gentle highlights on metal and lacquer surfaces. The color palette is rich but subdued, emphasizing deep blues, browns, and brass tones. The mood is reverent and quietly proud, suggesting decades of gigs and stories. Photographed from directly above with sharp focus and careful spacing, in a clean, documentary-style image that feels authentic and professional.
